I've found that TuneLink has the best sound quality of Bluetooth receivers that I've tried for cars. (Griffin and Belkin were the others--but to be fair they are primarily for hands-free phone calls so music isn't their primary use.) I tested all with aux line-in.
TuneLink has a free app that you only need to use when configuring settings (if you're using the fm transmitter you'll want app to autostart if you change radio frequencies frequently). I like that you have 3 choices when you start your car: 1) do not auto-connect 2) auto-connect 3) auto-connect and auto-play last song that was paused. I've tested auto-play and it works with iPod, Pandora, Slacker, and Sticher. I wasn't able to get auto-play to work with TuneIn Radio.
If your only connection choice is an FM transmitter and you've never use an FM transmitter, you will be disappointed. However, if you have used an FM transmitter before (and realize how inherently bad they are) you'll be very happy with TuneLink quality and ease of use.
I tested sound quality with a range of music (Tango, classical, Tron legacy soundtrack) and they all sounded great with full dynamic range. If you have trouble, plug headphones directly into the TuneLink audi jack to test--your car's wiring might be the problem--search for "car ground loop hum" for solutions. If it still sounds bad with headphones and you have an Android phone, it may be Bluetooth encoding issues with the hardware or OS version. I am using iPhone 4 on iOS 4.3.3. I did notice occasional stuttering with iPhone 3G running iOS 3.1.3--fixed once it was upgraded to 4.
TuneLink works fine together with OEM bluetooth hands-free kit or a headset for phone calls.
